An application outage can be caused by many different issues: the server platform may become unstable; the security of the site may be comprised; the application code may have a bug, and no one remembered to restart the application. Many application outages caused by the same repeated issue are more commonly attributed to a lack clear responsibility for the overall availability of the application.

The Blame Game

Commonly, having experienced an application outage, the IT agent will call the hosting company to resolve the issue. The hosting company will check the server and operating system, report everything is fine and suggest calling the developer. The developer will state the code is good, and direct the user back at the hosting company.

This frustrating back and forward blame game is something most IT departments have experienced at one time or another. When no party takes responsibility, nothing is resolved. Every minute the application fails to perform, the business is losing valuable revenue.
