Connecting Using ADSL - Win XP

Configuring an internal/external ADSL modem

The Internet Connection Wizard in Microsoft Windows provides a quick and simple way to setup your connection to Claranet. The following is an easy guide to setting up an ADSL connection in Windows XP if you are using an internal/external ADSL modem.

Please note before you attempt the following steps you are required to install the drivers/software for your modem. Without the correct drivers/software installed, following these steps will not enable you to connect. For more information regarding installing your ADSL modem, please refer to the manufacturer's documentation supplied with the device.

1) Click on the Start menu and then select Run

2) Type in inetwiz and click on Ok. At the next screen (shown below) select "Connect using my phone line" and click on Next to proceed.

Please note: on the next screen you may be prompted to select your modem from a drop down menu before the screen displayed in step 3, please select your modem from the list and click on Next to proceed to step 3.

3) In this box, ensure you un-check "Use area code and dialing rules". You do not need to enter the area code so leave it blank. Enter 0 in the telephone number box and then click on Next.

4) Enter the full Claranet ADSL user name, and password for your account. These values are case sensitive.

Your username should look like either of the following:

joebloggs@adsl-1.uk.clara.net
joebloggs@adsl-2.uk.clara.net

If your Claranet e-mail address is johnsmith@clara.co.uk this would make your ADSL logon username johnsmith@adsl-1.uk.clara.net or johnsmith@adsl-2.uk.clara.net. The syntax after the @ symbol is known as the ADSL Gateway. The gateway affiliated with your account would have been sent to you once the service was activated. Once the username and password is entered correctly, click on Next to proceed.

5) Enter a name for your connection that will allow you to identify it, for example: "Claranet". Once you have named your new connection, click on Next to proceed.

6) The final step will ask if you wish to create an email account. Select No for this option and click on Next to proceed. If you select yes, another wizard will launch prompting you to create an email account. For further information on setting up your email account please refer to our setup guides on email.

7) Click Finish to complete the setup.
You should now be able to connect to Claranet.
